Note* | Robert Barnes From the book More Marylanders to Kentucky 1778-1782 by Henry C. Peden, Jr. Pages 6-8 The following Barnes information was gleaned from an article by Larry D. Bowling and Pat Donaldson entitled "The Barnes Family of Fleming County, Kentucky. Maryland Genealogical Society Bulletin 33:3 (1992), which referred to an earlier Barnes article in Volume 32 No. 1 (1991) by Carol Ruth Gehrs Mitchell. The Barnes family arrived in Fleming County, Kentucky in 1787 along with several other Marylanders to establish the first white settlement in that county. This article explores what has been about this family and their associates and raises the question "Are these some of the descendants of James and Kueturah (Shipley) Barnes through their son Robert and and Lois (Porter) Barnes of Washington County, Maryland?" (Send comments and questions to Larry D. Bowling, 937 Field Club Road, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15238) Joshua Barnes , son of Robert Barnes and Lois Porter of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, appeared on the tax lists of Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1787, which then included Mason and Fleming Counties. In the spring of 1787 the Barnes and Williams families accompanied George Stockton and wife Rachel Dorsey, and Stockton's cousin Isaiah Keith, from wouthwestern Pennsylvania down the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers to Fleming County, Kentucky, where they built a stockaded settlement known as Stockton's Station. The Williams family included Basil Williams, John Williams, Jared Williams, Thomas Williams, Lawrence Williams, and Zadock Williams, (who was killed by the indians in 1788) all from Washington County, Maryland. The Barnes family included Joshua Barnes and his wife Delila Williams and possibly others. Joshua died testate in 1806 in Kentucky . (Children listed in the FTM tree. Robert Barnes SR., joined Joshua Barnes at Stockton's Station by November 1, 1793, which is the date Robert's name first appeared on the Mason County, Kentucky tax list. In 1798, the year Fleming County was formed, Robert Barnes purchased 200 acres of land from Michael Cassidy, who was also from Maryland. Robert last appeared in the court records on March 11, 1812, when a judgment was ruled against him, Robert Barnes, Jr. and Samuel Barnes. Robert Barnes's wife is unknown. (Their children are listed in the FTM tree. He was still alive Sept 1809 when" he conveyed the plantation whereon I now live containing 100 acres and he(Robert) is live there and use as much of the cleared land as he chooses rent free for and during his natural life" to Samuel Barnes. March 11, 1812, the Sheriff of Fleming Co."as a result of a judgment in favor of Alexander Dougherty against Robert Barnes Jr. and Roberts Barnes Sr, and Samuel Barnes, the deputy seized, advertised and sold lots #75,77,79 in Flemingsburg to William P. Roper, the high bidder, for $12". This is the last time he is mentioned in court records or other documents. No will was found. | |
