Sterling was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Chicago to Reinhold and Ellen Nilsson. He graduated from Northwestern University with a B.S. in marketing and from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy with a degree in marine engineering.
He married Becky Harris in 1939 in Columbus, Ohio. He worked for Swift Packing Co. for 45 years before his retirement.
Sterling began his career as a messenger boy and became a manager of several beef plants. He transferred 10 times and always said that there was not a bad place to live in the U.S.
Sterling was a longtime board member at Sun Bank and a member of Dumas Noon Lions Club and Investment Club.
He served on the Moore County Appraisal District board, Dumas zoning board and was a volunteer driver for the Cancer Society. He was a resident of Chicago before coming to Dumas in 1975. He was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Martha Nilsson of Dallas; a sister, Glendora Larson of Longwood, Fla.; two grandchildren, Michael and Becca; and four great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1118, Dumas, TX 79029; or a favorite charity.
